Roasting Notes
We treat this Ethiopian Landrace as we do most Ethiopian coffees... with an aggressive application of heat throughout the roasting process to account for the denser coffee grown at these higher altitudes. This produces more sugar and acidity which brings out the flavors that natural process Ethiopian coffees are known for and highlights its bold, fruit-forward character with a clean, syrupy body. Expect ripe berry jam notes balanced by silky milk chocolate sweetness and floral aromatics
Coffee From the Kembata Zone of Ethiopia
The coffee from the Kembata-Durame Village area in Ethiopia has some of the oldest cultivated coffee in the world. This highland region is part of the broader Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR), where farming, particularly coffee, is deeply rooted in local heritage.
The altitude of the region mixed with its biodiversity creates ideal conditions for Ethiopian Landrace varietals, a diverse group of heirloom coffee plants that have naturally evolved in Ethiopia’s forests and cultivated by farmers for generations. Coffees from these areas are celebrated for their complexity and nuanced profiles.
As the importance of traceable, terroir-driven coffees grows, Kembata-Durame Village natural-processed coffees are recognized for having distinct and complex character from an area with a deep connection to the origins of cultivating coffee.
